QEEG Brain Mapping

What is a QEEG?

You may have heard of an EEG, which stands for “electroencephalogram”.  A special cap with holes for electrodes is placed on the head, and a clear gel is placed inside each hole.  This allows a computer to view and record your brainwaves, which are then analyzed.

So, what is the “Q” in QEEG?  The Q stands for “quantitative”.  This means we are measuring your brain waves in a variety of ways, such as how fast or slow they are, how strong the signals are, and how your brain waves compare to a normative data set.

Why are QEEGs important for Neurofeedback?

QEEGs help take the guess work out of neurofeedback.  They tell us exactly what your brain is doing that is getting in the way of you achieving your goals.  For example, problems in attention can show up in several different ways in the brain.  Maybe it’s due to too much theta in the frontal lobe….or maybe it’s from beta spindling….or maybe for too much widespread alpha, etc…  Once we know why your brain is having trouble focusing, we know what brainwaves need to be trained.  Without this information, it’s a guess!  And guessing wrong, can make symptoms worse instead of better.

Who is qualified to interpret QEEGs?

We recommend using someone who is board certified by The International QEEG Certification Board (IQCB).  At the Center for NeuroPotential, Dr. Amy Palmer is board certified as a licensed diplomate in QEEG analysis through the IQCB.

What are Brain Maps?

One of the ways we look at the information from a QEEG is to generate brain maps.  These maps provide a visual way to see what your brain is doing, such as how much power each rhythm has compared to a normative data sample. Below is just an example of what is generated.
